History of Gambling : A Brief Overview
Gambling is one of the earliest forms of entertainment that has ever taken place in human history.
Evidence points to the earliest forms of gambling taking place in China back around 2300 B.C. Dice were
even thought to have decided territory.
Back around the year 100 A.D., King Olaf of Norway and King Olaf of Sweden had to resolve a difference of opinion as to who should own the District of Hising. The Swedish king rolled back to back double sixes to win the territory.
Much like in today's society, gambling became a problem that had to be dealt with in the Middle Ages. Countries were forced to ban gambling for their soldiers, because they were so wrapped up in gambling that they could not carry out their duties.
China is thought to be the origin of playing cards. The Chinese developed paper, which led to them developing paper money. Once the two were put together, playing cards were invented. The Chinese learned how to shuffle paper money, and many believe that is where the practice of shuffling cards came from.
The deck of cards as it is known today was developed because once cards reached the Mediterranean countries, the cards were made to be distinguished by the royal ranks of nobleman. The French then altered the deck by pulling out one of the men and adding a queen.
In the 1830's Cincinnati became the place where casinos and house cuts were developed. Refugees set up gambling houses where the house would take a ten percent cut from the games. That is why they were called "10 Percent Houses."
Nevada, which now is the gambling capital of the world, actually made it a felony to operate a gambling game in 1910. Of course, in 1931, the state legalized gambling once again, and so started the beginning of the biggest gambling area in the world.
