Welcome To Churchill Down? In an attempt to capitalize on Kentucky's diminishing gambling industry, a lawmaker in Nevada is proposing legislation to change the name of Las Vegas to Churchill Down. The lawmaker is claiming the name change is being proposed to further play on Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear's insecurities.
Beshear has shown some of that insecurity in the past year when he went after online gambling domain names out of fear that they were taking money from Kentucky's precious racing industry. If Beshear lost sleep over online gambling, wait until Nevada lawmakers get a hold of him.
"Basically, I am proposing this legislation to change Las Vegas' name to Churchill Down for one reason, to f*ck with Steve Beshear," said Representative Barney Freud, "this guys been nothing but a prick, so we are going to try and hurt him where it counts."
There may be some other motives involved as well. Las Vegas has struggled mightily in the past few years since the economy has taken a turn for the worst. Lawmakers in favor of the name change said that maybe with a different name, Las Vegas could rebuild its casino industry.
The horse racing industry has prospered even in these trying times, and many believe that recent changes in Nevada have been made to capitalize on the horse racing gambling popularity. Some of those changes include new casinos named Pimlico Resort and Belmont Casino & Spa.
Another change being discussed would be to undercut all of the odds that come out of Kentucky racing facilities so that bettors would place their bets in Nevada, and not Kentucky.
When asked about the proposed name change legislation in Nevada, Beshear seemed defiant, "It looks like my staff and I are going to have to seize the name of Nevada, and also seize all of their casinos, their sports books, and their women," said Beshear.
A reporter pressed Beshear on the fact that it was just as illegal to do that as it was to seize online gambling domain names, and Beshear had this response, "Who cares if it's legal, I'm the governor of Kentucky, I can try to do what I want."
