NFL Increase Role in Govt. The NFL has played an influential a role in the development of anti-gambling laws across the United States, moreso than any other lobbying group. Now, state governments are looking to the NFL for more than just gambling advice. Delaware, who recently enabled sports betting in the state, along with Nevada, are the only two states in America that will not be seeking the NFL's advice on other important policy decisions.
"The NFL has been so instrumental in helping us see the light when it comes to sports betting," said one Iowa representative. "They have proven to us that facts and figures mean nothing, it's all about presenting the desired corporate image to the public," the representative said. "And in this time of recession, isn't it more important to look like we're doing good than to actually do good?"
The Iowa representative pointed out that sports betting is one of the most participated in illegal activities in the United States, yet the NFL remains constant in their objections to the popular habits of Americans. "We, in government, must realize, that it is not about what the American people want, it is about what the corporations think is right for their business."
A Wyoming representative we contacted said they were seeking out the NFL's advice on how to handle other important policy issues such as if there should be prayer in school, whether we should teach our children the importance of sexual protection, whether state's should approve gay marriage, and even whether they should be legalizing or keeping banned medical use marijuana.
The NFL representative we contacted said they were happy with their newly increased role in contributing opinions to state governments about important policy debates. "We will continue to fight for the rights of corporations and industries to have greater power over the American people," the NFL rep. said, "and we are glad that state governments are being more open to the idea of letting us run their states."
