Christ Says No Problem gambling in the United States will decrease dramatically if the US government decides to legalize and regulate the online gambling industry, according to a new study published by the Church of God and Morals. Letters have been written from many religious groups affiliated with the Church of God and Morals, demanding that online gambling remain illegal, even though their own study proved that regulation of online gambling would be good for American society.
"It doesn't matter that problem gamblers and children would be better protected by regulation of online gambling," said Church of God and Morals spokesman, Cindy Doright. "We still see gambling as morally wrong."
The study was done on a control group consisting of 25 Christians, all of whom were assumed to have been problem gamblers for more than ten years. The 25 Christians were allowed to gamble online with real money with the caveat that their deposits and playing activity would be closely monitored by Church leaders. Their local bookies were also contacted (which was easy for the Church to do since the bookies are all loyal members of the Church) and they were told not to allow bets or wagers from these 25 Christians. They agreed and after two years the study concluded that zero of the 25 members of the control group developed further gambling habits than they already had, and 24 of the 25 actually stopped gambling all together.
One Christian gambler who was monitored said that the increase in reporting kept them from hiding the fact that they were gambling, thus they were much more conscious of their habits than when they used to gamble with their neighborhood bookie.
"Now that the government (in this case the Church) knows what I do I don't want it to be known that I have a problem gambling, and since I couldn't go to my neighborhood bookie for the past two years I basically just stopped gambling," he said.
Although the study was performed unscientifically, on an insignificant proportion of the gambling population, the religious group sent a letter to Congress with the findings and Congress believes that is more than sufficient to use as their basis for creating new laws.
"As long as the religious group put it in writing and told us about it, we believe it to be true." said one Congressman we contacted. "The study says online gambling regulation would be good, but the Church is still morally opposed to it, so that is what we must base our laws on."
When asked if he would look further into the subject, perhaps by reading over other, more scientific studies, the Congressman told us that he wouldn't. He said these findings confirmed what he believed anyway so there would no need to look at other more factual documents.
