Cranky Carl This is the first installment of the Cranky Carl files, so let us give you some background into our resident poker playing, well, we'll call him an expert for the purposes of this series. Cranky Carl has never played a hand of poker incorrectly. He also has never placed an ill-advised bet, or called with a marginal hand.
Of course, all of these ideas are figments of Cranky Carl's imagination, but nevertheless it makes for good reading, so we gave him a job. The reality is that Carl does not know much about the game of poker, he is just a cranky guy we found who was bagging groceries at the local supermarket. we gave him a job and the money to play poker around the country, and his rants have become a comedy routine for the seasoned poker player to read..
Here is the first installment, titled, "Idiot Called With An A-K Suited."
Cranky Carl was the big blind in a tournament with the blinds at $10-$20. It was a deep stack tournament in which each player had $20,000 in chips in front of them. Two players limp in and Carl checks the big blind with 9-2 off suit in his hand. The flop comes out A-H 4-D 2-C.
Of course, being that he has little poker experience, Carl bets out $1,500 into a $60 pot. That alone would be funny enough, if not for what happened next. The first player folds, and the small blind calls.
The turn comes J-D. Carl still feels his 9 high is good, so he moves all in to protect what he thought was the best hand of 9 high. The player, who is holding A-K, thinks for a second and then makes the call. They flip their cards, a Q-S comes on the river and Carl is knocked out of the tournament.
"What the f*ck are you calling me with A-K suited for idiot," Carl says to the player, who decides not to respond, "Who the hell would call with an A-K when there is a $1,500 bet?"
When Carl's friend tries to explain to Carl that the $1,500 bet into a $60 bet was a little excessive, Carl was having none of it. "I had the best hand. My nine was good until that moron called my $1,500 bet."
Indeed Cranky Carl, your hand was good for that brief moment before the player with the winning hand called your bet. Good job, and good luck in your next tournament.
