New Casino Proposal If the state of North Dakota thought they had a battle on their hands when they banned smoking in state casinos, wait until they learn what they are up against if Representative Barry Goldwater gets his way.
Goldwater is proposing that gum be banned from state casino after learning that thousands of people were complaining that there was gum stuck to the bottom of many of the slot machines inside the casinos.
"This is a simple law that will keep people from having to reach down and touch the slot machine for good luck, and come up with sticky fingers from gum that was on the machine," said Goldwater, "people should not have to deal with that sort of disgusting feeling at our casinos."
The issue is setting up to be quite a showdown between proponents of the new legislation, and the lobbying powerhouse Citizens In Favor Of Fresh Breath. The group has already set up a rally at the state capital where they are expected to line the streets with used pieces of bubble gum.
"If Representative Goldwater wanted to change the laws and just allow sugarless gum in the casinos and ban all others, that would be fine,' said CIFOF Chairman John Freshteeth, "But to ban gum altogether, we simply cannot stand pat and watch that kind of law enacted."
Republican members of the legislature have come out in favor of the ban, while Democratic leaders have blasted the proposal, saying that it takes way individual freedoms.
Representative Barney Frank is concerned that if the Bill passes, the next step could be to ban gum chewing while on the Internet. He has said in recent weeks that people in the US should be allowed to chew gum after they take a hit of marijuana and prepare to gamble online in the comfort of their own home.
